RARAMURI TRAVELS
We are thrilled to share the news of the successful races that our Raramuri athletes have participated in abroad. Through the fundraising efforts of our friends worldwide, Race Director, Photographer, and Mas Loco, Luis Escobar, along with our friend, Caity McCardell, ten year Visas were granted to several Raramuri runners. Along with the freedom to travel independently, the athletes were compensated with appearance fees, and many heartfelt donations from fellow race participants, provided cash, clothing and running apparel for their families.
In May, the team from Porochi: Miguel Lara, Isidro Quintero, and Horacio Estrada, managed by Mario Munoz, raced in the fourth annual, Born To Run Ultra Marathon in Los Olivos, California. Directed by El Coyote, Luis Escobar, the week's festivities included a cultural exchange of music,dancing, Rarajipare Bolla racing, and running the 50K, and 100K loop course.
Two weeks later, Team Porochi traveled to Westcliffe, Colorado to race in the second annual, Hardscrabble 45K. Directed by Champion Burro Racer, Ultra Marathon athlete and Publisher, Hal Walter, activities included a Rarajipare race, and community cook out.
Meanwhile, the legendary Raramuri champions of Batopilas Canyons: Arnulfo Quimare, and Silvino Cubesare, accompanied by Host Salvador Holguin, traveled throughout the rugged canyons of Madrid and Barcelona, Spain to compete in the 154K Quixote challenge. Every Raramuri traveling throughout the U.S. and Spain were treated with great honor and respect.
The next foot race for the Raramuri, will be the Ultramaraton de Los Canones, July 18-20 in the Sinfarosa Canyon of Guachochi. The 63K and 100K course, is one of the mist challenging, yet beautiful race of the year. Returning Champion, Miguel Lara, vows to keep his reigning title. Approximately 20 athletes from Urique plan to participate, including 13 year old, female champion, Catalina Rascon.
THE CABALLO BLANCO TRAIL RESTORATION
Through the fundraising efforts of the Non Profit, Norawas de Raramuri, donated funds were generated to restore the historical trail which Caballo and thousands of Raramuri families traverse upon, connecting all people to the gateway between Batopilas and Urique Canyons. Your donations provided employment to many Raramuri which were part of the original 2002 team of runners who raced in the first Copper Canyon Ultra Marathon. Prospero Torres, a devoted friend and first race sponsor and supporter of the vision and dreams of Caballo, continues to manage this trail. Prospero designed a beautiful, lasting memorial at the top hillside of his ranch at Los Alisos.
THE ACTIVITIES OF URIQUE
As the Monsoon season continues, the summer months of La Sierra, are blessed with heavy rains. The rivers are flowing, forcefully. And, the forests, farmlands, and landscape throughout La Sierra, are lush and green. May and June, recorded extreme heat, rising as high as 124 degrees farenheight. The billowing pockets of clouds, radiate a heavenly glory, as the families of Las Barrancas literally enjoy the fruits of their harvests. Mango, Papaya, and Guava trees are abundant. Beans, coffee and corn, provide bountiful nutrition and sustainability to last throughout the summer and into the fall.
Under the leadership of Presidente Daniel Silva Figueroa, who is an avid supporter of education, sports, and arts, his administration now provides the children of Urique a Summer School of activities, which includes: Tournaments of Soccer, Basketball, along with lessons in arts and dance.
Director of Tourism, Cecy Villalobos is excited once again for the upcoming preparations for the race activities of the Ultra Maraton Caballo Blanco. "Everyone asks about this race. The spirit of Caballo Blanco, lives in the Hearts of all Uriquenes. Mas Locos, are our family. We can't wait to see the movie of Caballo's wonderful life. We are One!" Kuira Ba!
